Article Fifteen Brewing Plans to Move from Weymouth to Rockland

A brewery on the South Shore is moving to a brand new location.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Article Fifteen Brewing in Weymouth is in the process of moving to Rockland, with a Patriot Ledger article from earlier this year mentioning that it will be reopening in a much larger space on VFW Drive that had been home to Kathy Corrigan's School of Gymnastics. The brewery, which had resided on Washington Street near where it intersects Middle Street, hopes to host events and feature live entertainment in the new space, which, like its old space, is a short distance off Route 3.

No opening date has been given for the reopening of Article Fifteen, so keep checking back for updates.

The address for the new location of Article Fifteen Brewing is 406 VFW Drive, Rockland, MA, 02370. Its website can be found at https://articlefifteenbrewing.com/

Flavor Boom Is Opening in Watertown

A couple of months ago, it was reported that a new dining spot featuring pizza and Mexican food might be replacing a Watertown pizzeria that also featured Armenian dishes. Now we have learned that another restaurant is coming to that building, though it looks like both new spots will apparently be opening in the same block now.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Flavor Boom is now planning to open on Arsenal Street where Flaming Pit had been, with signs in the windows showing a logo for the place. A website for the restaurant mentions that it will be a "gourmet fast food restaurant and caterer specializing in slow-cooked Asian dishes with an international twist. Served over rice or as sandwiches." No opening date has been given as of yet, so stay tuned for updates.

Back in May, a sign out front indicated that VR Las Amigas was planning to open soon in the former Flaming Pit space; it is not known if that dining spot might still be taking over part of the space (we will post an update on that as well once we learn more).

The address for Flavor Boom is 224 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA, 02472.

[August 3 update: A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page says that VR Las Amigas will actually be opening in the Flaming Pit space while Flavor Boom will be opening in a former catering space in the same block.]

[September 1 update: A Facebook post within the Boston Bike Party Facebook community page indicates that Flavor Boom is now open, and that it features Indonesian food.]

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, What Da Chick Boston is opening in the former Matilda's space in East Watertown, with the Crawford Street spot apparently offering Thai chicken rice based on a photo on the restaurant's Facebook page. by CHLOE in Boston's Back Bay Rebrands As Beatnic

A few months ago, it was reported that a group of fast-casual vegan spots had emerged from bankruptcy under new ownership but would need to change its name over the coming months. Now we have heard that the rebranding is indeed in the process of taking place, including a renaming of its sole remaining Boston location.

According to an article from Eater, by CHLOE is changing to Beatnic, which the post says is a reference to "the restaurant's roots in Greenwich Village and the historic Beatnik movement." The article mentions that all locations--including its Back Bay outlet on Boylston Street--will be setting up new signage, packaging, and online changes over the course of the next few months, while its menu is undergoing some changes as well.

by CHLOE opened its first shop in Manhattan's West Village in 2015, with co-founder Chloe Coscarelli leaving the company in 2016 and proceeding to get into a legal battle over the use of her name. The group of eateries filed for bankruptcy in late 2020, and somewhere along the way, locations in the Fenway and Seaport District shuttered permanently.

The website for Beatnic can be found at https://www.eatbeatnic.com/

Update: Abby Lane in Boston's Theater District to Reopen in the Fall After Being in Hibernation Since Last Fall

[Ed note: This article was updated on July 28, 2021 to reflect the fact that the restaurant plans to open later this year.]

A restaurant in downtown Boston that has a celebrity chef behind it is one of the latest dining spots to go into hibernation.

Based on information from a couple of sources, Abby Lane in Boston's Theater District has shut down for the time being as of November of 2020, with owner Jason Santos confirming this to us and indicating that the Tremont Street spot plans to be closed for the winter of 2020/2021 "at most." (Santos also indicates that the lack of a patio along with no theatergoers in the area both played a role in the decision.) It appears that his other dining spots, including Buttermilk & Bourbon and Citrus & Salt in the Back Bay and the new B&B Fish in Marblehead, remain in operation for now.

Jason Santos, who is known in part for his TV appearances (including on Hell's Kitchen), first opened Abby Lane in 2012, with the restaurant offering a mix of New American and classic American fare along with craft cocktails.

[July 28, 2021 update: A message sent to us indicates that Abby Lane is looking to reopen in the fall of 2021 when Boston theaters start to return.]

Acapulcos in Sudbury Is Closed Until Further Notice; Space Now for Sale/Lease

The future of one a location of a local group of Mexican restaurants appears to be in question.

According to a source, a sign posted out front at Acapulcos in Sudbury says that the Boston Post Road spot "will be closed for remodeling until further notice," while a sign in front of the property says "For Sale or Lease." The web page for the Sudbury outlet hints that the restaurant could be returning, as it says that "We are temporarily closed due to maintenance and repairs. Please check back in for updates on our reopening. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience." As soon as we find out more about the exact status of the dining spot, we will post an update here.

Other locations of Acapulcos in Beverly, Franklin, Milford, Norwood, Quincy, and Enfield and Stratford, CT, remain in operation.

The address for the Sudbury location of Acapulcos is 694 Boston Post Road (Route 20), Sudbury, MA, 01776. The website for all of the locations can be found at https://acapulcos.net/

[August 13 update: An article from Wicked Local mentions that a substantial amount of work needs to be done to the Acapulcos space in Sudbury in order to get it up to code, and while it is possible that the restaurant could reopen if the fixes are made, the owner of the building put up the "For Sale or Lease" sign to see if a new restaurant might be interested in the space (the article says that it is also possible that a new owner or developer could do something else with the space instead).]

Da LaPosta Pizzeria Is Opening in the Cook Space in Newtonville

A couple of years ago, it was reported that an artisanal pizzeria was planning to open in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood, and now we have learned that it is opening in a suburban location instead.

According to a post within the jobs section of bostonchefs.com, Da LaPosta Pizzeria is going to be opening in Newtonville, with the address shown in both the job post and a public meeting notice indicating that it will be moving into the space on Washington Street where Cook currently resides. The pizzeria had originally been looking to open in a part of the old Bee's Knees space on Farnsworth Street in Fort Point, but that appears to have fallen through; the person behind the place is Mario LaPosta, who has worked at such spots as the now-closed Babbo Pizzeria e Enoteca in the Seaport District, Bricco in West Hartford, CT, and Tarry Lodge in Westport, CT, and who has also competed in the World Pizza Championship in Italy.

We have reached out to Mario LaPosta and will update this article with any additional information if it comes in.

The address for Da LaPosta Pizzeria is 825 Washington Street, Newtonville, MA, 02460.

[August 9 update: A message sent from Mario LaPosta indicates that Da LaPosta will indeed be replacing Cook in Newtonville and that it will focus on sourdough pizzas cooked at 900 degrees in a Marra Forni oven, while daily specials including pasta dishes will also be offered--and the restaurant will serve beer, Southern Italian wine, and cocktails.]

[September 13 update: According to a source, Cook in Newtonville is now closed.]

Beerworks Is Shutting Down Operations

A local group of breweries and brewpubs that had permanently shut down a few of their locations over the past year or so has decided to call it a day.

According to a tweet from Drew Starr, Beerworks is suspending operations company-wide, with a note on its website saying the following:

THANK YOU BOSTON, SALEM, LOWELL, HINGHAM, FRAMINGHAM. Sad to say but we've brewed and served our last beers. We've decided to pack it in due to the pandemic and all that. We will miss you and the many years of fun we had bringing you fresh local beer and food. BEERWORKS was proud to serve you. Sincerely Joe Slesar and the BEERWORKS Team

All locations of Beerworks temporarily closed at the start of the pandemic, with outlets in Framingham, Hingham, and Salem subsequently shutting down permanently.

Beerworks first started out in 1992 in the Fenway, with that location being a popular spot especially during baseball season; the Fenway outlet was followed by locations in Salem, North Station/West End, Lowell, Hingham and Framingham.

Pho Hoa Is Opening in the Former Jack's Ristorante/Ferrari's Space in Malden

A new Vietnamese with a familiar name is on its way to Malden.

According to a source (Aron Levy), Pho Hoa is planning to open on Eastern Avenue, taking over the space that had been home to Jack's Ristorante, and before that, Ferrari's. A meeting minutes page within the city's website indicates that the upcoming eatery has an indirect connection to Pho Hoa in Dorchester, as Duong Le, who is the proposed manager of the place, is the brother of the owner of the location on Dorchester Avenue near Fields Corner. One interesting note is that a location of Pho Hoa had once been located on Pleasant Street in Malden and it also had a family connection to the Dorchester location, while two other locations had once been located in Boston's Chinatown and in Quincy.

The address for the new location of Pho Hoa in Malden is 655 Eastern Avenue, Malden, MA, 02148.

White's Bakery in Hingham Is Closing

A small local group of bakeries is getting ready to close another one of its locations, which means that only two outlets will soon remain.

According to an Instagram post from the place, White's Bakery at the Derby Street Shops in Hingham is shutting down on August 21, saying that "This was an incredibly hard decision to make, but it was the right one for us. It was not made lightly or due to the pandemic, but because it is the best course of action for our family at this time." This will be the second location to close over the past year or so, as its Wellesley outlet shuttered last summer. (Locations in Brockton and Mansfield remain in operation.)

White's dates back to 1980 with the opening of a shop in Florida, according to its website; the first location in Massachusetts opened in 1987 in Easton, with that one moving to Brockton. (Other outlets had once been located in Braintree and Canton as well.)

The address for White's Bakery in Hingham is 98 Derby Street, Hingham, MA, 02043. The website for the business can be found at https://www.whitesbakeryandcafe.com/

Hunter's Kitchen & Bar Is Opening in the Former Junction Space in South Boston

The group behind several South Boston restaurants will be opening a new dining and drinking spot near all of them, and it will be taking over the space that has been home to a local bar that has been around for nearly 20 years.

According to a post within the jobs section of the bostonchefs.com site, Hunter's Kitchen & Bar is opening on Dorchester Street, with the address given indicating that it is moving into the space where The Junction has been since 2002. The post mentions that it will have a "southern fare food focus and a great bar scene" and that its sister restaurants are Capo, Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant, Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, and Fat Baby, which indicates that Hunter's will be part of the Broadway Restaurant Group. (The Junction had also been under the same ownership since shortly before Covid struck.)

The address for Hunter's Kitchen & Bar (and The Junction) is 110 Dorchester Street, South Boston, MA, 02127.

[August 12 update: An article from boston.com indicates that Hunter's Kitchen & Bar is now open, and that it has the feel of an "an old hunter's lodge" while offering such dishes as brisket sliders, chicken and waffles, ribs, and macaroni and cheese. Kevin Mabry to Return to jm Curley in Boston's Downtown Crossing

A restaurant and bar in the heart of downtown Boston that burst out of the gates to much fanfare when it first opened 10 years ago is seeing the return of one of the people involved in its opening.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Kevin Mabry is taking over as manager of jm Curley, with a message from him telling us that he will be a managing partner of the Temple Place spot. Mabry, who helped open the place around the end of 2011, was the bar manager/beverage director during the time in which jm Curley received all kinds of accolades, and Mabry himself was included in The Daily Meal's list of best bartenders in the country in 2014.

The address for jm Curley (along with Bogie's place, which is a "speakeasy" steakhouse within the space) is 21 Temple Place, Boston, MA, 02111. Its website can be found at https://www.jmcurleyboston.com/

Scores May Be Taking Over The Fours Space in Boston's North Station Area

A new restaurant and bar appears to be in the works for the area around North Station and TD Garden in Boston, and it could be taking over the space where one of the city's most popular watering holes had been until announcing its closure last summer.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Scores is looking to open in the space on Canal Street that had been home to The Fours, with the manager listed for the proposed place being Fred Starikov while the parent company is Boston Garden Fours LLC; a page within the OpenCorporates site for that company shows that in addition to Starikov, Dana Rosenblatt, Julius Sokol, and Stephen Whalen are also involved, which indicates a connection to Greater Boston Bar Co., an investment group that owns such spots as the Beacon Hill Pub and The Tam. Very little is known about Scores at this point in time, so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

The Boston location of The Fours first opened in 1976 and became a very popular spot for sports fans, featuring meals named after local sports figures including Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, Doug Flutie, Ray Bourque, Carl Yastrzemski, and others. Two other locations remain in operation in Quincy and Norwell.

The address for the proposed Scores (and the now-closed Fours) is 166 Canal Street, Boston, MA, 02114.

BBQ Chicken Is Planning to Expand to Malden

A Korean chain that focuses on all things chicken--and has a restaurant in Allston--is apparently expanding to at least one other location in the local area.

According to a message sent from Richard Auffrey of The Passionate Foodie, BBQ Chicken is looking to open at J Malden Center, a mixed-use development on Pleasant Street in the downtown section of the city. This will either be the second or third location of the eatery, as an earlier article here mentioned that another outlet could be coming to Merrimack Street in Lowell as well.

Based on the location of BBQ Chicken on Harvard Avenue in Allston, expect to see a variety of options for wings and boneless chicken at the new restaurant along with whole chicken dishes.

It appears that the address for the upcoming BBQ Chicken in Malden is 190 Pleasant Street, Malden, MA, 02148. The website for the Allston location can be found at https://www.bbqchickenallston.com/

Flat Top Johnny's Is Looking to Reopen in Allston

A beloved restaurant, bar, and pool hall in Cambridge that shut down last summer could be brought back to life in a Boston neighborhood, though details are few as of now.

According to a source, Flat Top Johnny's is apparently looking to reopen somewhere in Allston and that a meeting may have taken place (or will be taking place) this week on the subject. The former Kendall Square spot added to the mystery with an Instagram post from last week saying that "We are looking for folks in Allston who might be able to speak at a meeting of The Allston Civic Association. We will post more details when we get them but in the mean tell your friends! #3.0" The 3.0 appears to refer to a third incarnation of the place, as the second incarnation was its reopening five years ago after being forced to close due to a fire.

Flat Top Johnny's shut its doors last August after being in business for 27 years.

[July 22 update: A Facebook post from Flat Top Johnny's confirms that they are indeed looking at being reborn in Allston, saying that a meeting was scheduled for last night to discuss their plans to open at 210 N Harvard Street, which is just south of the Western Avenue intersection. (Thanks to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page for bringing this to our attention.)]

[July 28 update: A tweet from @certaintragedy indicates that the proposed location of Flat Top Johnny's in Allston plans to include a restaurant, pool hall, and back patio, while the hope is to also have a full liquor license as well.]

Mooo.... Plans to Open in the Former Bastille Kitchen Space in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood

The group behind a steakhouse in downtown Boston will be opening another location not too far away, and it will replace a French restaurant that had been in business for eight years.

According to both a message from Adam Castiglioni of the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog and a tweet from @FortPointer, Mooo... is planning to open in the city's Fort Point neighborhood, moving into the space on Melcher Street that had been home to Bastille Kitchen. The original location of Mooo.... is located on the eastern edge of Beacon Hill and is part of the Columbus Hospitality Group which includes such spots as Bar Lyon, Mistral, Sorellina, and Teatro--and which also includes L'Andana, a Burlington restaurant that was planning to be replaced by another location of Mooo...., though this hasn't happened yet and it isn't known whether these plans are still in place.

Bastille Kitchen, which opened in 2014, focused in part on inventive takes on classic French dishes.

The address for the upcoming location of Mooo.... in Fort Point is 49 Melcher Street, Boston, MA, 02210. The website for the Beacon Hill location can be found at http://mooorestaurant.com/

T-Bones Roadhouse in Plymouth Has Closed

A South Shore restaurant and bar affiliated with two popular Boston dining and drinking spots that closed during the pandemic has now closed as well.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting and an article from Wicked Local and the Old Colony Memorial, T-Bones Roadhouse in Plymouth is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from Colin Wilcox of the Main Street spot saying the following:

It is with a broken heart that I have to say T-Bones will be closing for good. I have done everything in my powers to try to keep it alive, fighting every second of the way. Because of the connection to our other restaurants in Boston, the Covid-19 damage has come to Plymouth. It has been like playing a game of Jenga with my soul being slowly pulled apart until it falls to the ground.

The two places that Wilcox refers to are The Pour House and Whiskey's, both of which resided on Boylston Street in Boston's Back Bay and both of which shut down last summer.

The address for the now-closed T-Bones Roadhouse was 22 Main Street, Plymouth, MA, 02360.

Alfredo's of Saugus Plans to Open in the Former Bistro's Space

Last week it was reported that a North Shore restaurant known in part for its breakfast dishes and comfort food items had closed. Now we have learned that a new Italian eatery may be moving into its space.

According to an article from the Saugus Advertiser and Wicked Local, Alfredo's of Saugus is looking to open in the former Bistro's space on Lincoln Avenue, with the proposed spot planning to offer such options as pizza, calzones, subs, and pasta dishes. There may be a naming issue, however, as the post mentions that the owner of Alfredo's Italian Kitchen in Lynn has already taken legal action for trademark infringement, saying that there is no connection between the two restaurants.

Bistro's had been in the Lincoln Street space since the spring of 2018, offering such items as French toast, omelets, waffles, wings, burgers, club sandwiches, quesadillas, ribs, and pasta dishes.

The address for the proposed Alfredo's of Saugus (and the now-closed Bistro's) is 240 Lincoln Avenue, Saugus, MA, 01906.

Cafe Martin Is Opening in the Former West Street Tavern & Restaurant Space in Newton's Nonantum Neighborhood

A new dining spot is on its way to Newton, taking over the space where an Irish restaurant and pub had been until closing earlier this year.

According to a source, Cafe Martin is planning to open in the Nonantum neighborhood of the city, and it will be moving into the former West Street Tavern & Restaurant space just off Route 16. A check on the place indicates that a web page is now up that simply says "Cafe Martin West Street coming soon," and we have been told that the upcoming spot will be very much like that of the old West Street Tavern & Restaurant and that it could be opening in late September.

The West Street Tavern & Restaurant first opened back in 2008.

The address for Cafe Martin is 7 West Street, Newton, MA, 02458. Its website will be at https://www.cafemartinweststreet.com/

[November 15 update: Social media posts from the business indicates that Cafe Martin got its start at a home in Newton that was nicknamed "Cafe Martin" in 2017 and became a place where people could gather together for food, drink, conversation, and support for Adrienne Martin's husband John (a former NESN photographer who was diagnosed with ALS and passed away in 2018) and his family. The post indicates that, as mentioned earlier, few changes will be coming to the former West Street Tavern & Restaurant space other than "A little paint here & there, a few lil upgrades & we are creating the menu to be similar to the previous one!"]

[February 11, 2022 update: According to a post from WBZ CBS Boston, Cafe Martin is now open, with its hours being 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM daily.]

Little Dipper in Jamaica Plain Shuts Down Brunch Service; Will Continue to Host Popups Within the Space

A space-themed diner that was one of countless restaurants to temporarily close last fall (but has continued to offer brunch service and host pop-ups) is now basically shutting down, though it will continue to be home to pop-ups for at least the time being.

According to a post from Universal Hub, Little Dipper in Jamaica Plain has decided to end its weekend brunch, with a Facebook post from the Centre Street spot saying the following:

...due to staffing and other challenges, the Little Dipper team will no longer be open for weekend brunch....While we plot a new course, our focus is on supporting the two amazing pop-up teams currently operating out of Little Dipper -- Comfort Kitchen and Be Okay Bagels. They will be using our fb and insta to keep you up to date on their menus and hours of operation. Both plan on opening their own brick-and-mortar restaurants; we urge you to support them, and wish them great success.

Little Dipper, which first opened in the summer of 2018, temporarily shuttered in mid-November of 2020, saying at the time that "It has not been an easy decision to make, but we see closing temporarily as our best option to survive the colder months of the pandemic."

The address for Little Dipper is 669a Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130.
