Ristorante Fiore in Boston's North End Is Closing

A longtime dining spot in the North End is getting ready to shut down.

According to a Facebook post from the place, Ristorante Fiore is closing its doors, with the note from the Hanover Street spot saying the following:

After much thought, I am hanging up my apron and will retire to spend time with my family, my incredible grandchildren, and do some hunting and fishing. Ristorante Fiore has been sold, and our final service will be on December 25, 2022. Having the passion to serve all of you has given me much joy for all these years, and now I look forward to the next phase of my life. Thank you so much for your loyalty, business, and friendship. I hope to see you before we close for the final dinner service! Buon Appetito! Fiore

A licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website indicates that a restaurant tentatively called Umbria appears to be looking at opening within the Fiore space, and the notice mentions that the manager is Joseph DePasquale, though it isn't known if DePasquale Ventures is directly involved. Joseph and his father Frank are part of that group which includes a number of restaurants in the North End and beyond--and Frank DePasquale was once behind Umbria Prime, a steakhouse that had been on Franklin Street in the city's Financial District.

Ristorante Fiore, which first opened more than 40 years ago, has been known in part for its rooftop dining area along with its old-fashioned Italian dishes.

The address for Ristorante Fiore is 250 Hanover Street, Boston, MA, 02113. Its website can be found at http://www.ristorantefiore.com/

Red Robin in Braintree Has Closed

A chain of burger restaurants has said farewell to the Greater Boston area, shutting down its last location along/inside Route 128.

According to a source, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree is no longer in business, with the website for the chain confirming this, as that outlet is no longer shown within the locations page for Massachusetts. With the closing of this location and the Woburn outlet a couple of years back, the closest Red Robin to Boston is now in Foxborough, with others remaining in operation in Holyoke, Millbury, Plymouth, and Wareham.

Jeveli's in East Boston Goes on the Auction Block

It looks like a landmark restaurant in East Boston whose future had been in question for awhile may be done.

According to a page from Stanley J. Paine, Jeveli's went up for auction beginning on November 10 and ending on November 16, with the notice saying that "we will sell...the entire contents of the former Jeveli's restaurant. Property sold. Everything goes!" The notice says that Stanley J. Paine held the auction in association with E.F Smith and Son, while Drew Starr posted last week within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page (via a post from Seth Gitell) that it didn't look like the restaurant would be coming back, with pictures showing a mostly cleared out space.

Jeveli's first opened in 1924, being billed as the oldest Italian restaurant in Boston; it initially shut down for the winter in November of 2020 due to the pandemic but it never ended up reopening, leading to much speculation about its future.

The address for Jeveli's was 387 Chelsea Street, East Boston, MA, 02128.

Simcha in Sharon Is Reopening

Several months ago, an award-winning suburban restaurant that focuses on Israeli food closed down for the time being and its future appeared to be in question. Now we have learned that it is on its way back.

A Facebook post from chef/restaurateur Avi Shemtov indicates that Simcha is reopening, saying that he is "actively looking to open Simcha back up in Sharon" and that he is seeking to hire bartenders and servers. A message sent to us from Shemtov mentions that the restaurant will be returning to its original home on South Main Street adjacent to the new location of Hummus v'Hummus, which he recently opened in the space where he had previously operated A La Esh.

Simcha, which first opened in 2019, was included among Boston Magazine's best new restaurants in an article that year; when it closed in June, Shemtov was looking at possibly opening Smoke & Fire in its space, but that concept has been put on the shelf for now.

The address for Simcha is 370 South Main Street, Sharon, MA, 02067.

[January 4, 2023 update: A message from Avi Shemtov indicates that Simcha is back open for private events, ticketed dinners, cooking classes, and some public dinner services, with a Sunday brunch (10-3) and "Wing Wednesdays" being held each week for walk-ins only (no reservations are being taken at this point in time).]

Canary Square in Jamaica Plain Has Closed

A neighborhood restaurant and bar known for its classic American fare and beer list has shut down.

According to multiple sources within the restaurant industry, Canary Square in Jamaica Plain closed its doors after business hours Friday night, with no reason given for the closure of the S Huntington Avenue spot; we reached out to the place on Friday and are still waiting to hear back, while phone calls went directly to voicemail with no option to speak to anyone there. Canary Square first opened in 2010, with the people behind the now-closed Coda in Boston's South End and Common Ground in Allston being behind the opening. Some of the offerings at the place included poutine, macaroni and cheese, roast chicken, bolognese, fish and chips, Cuban sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and pizza.

Broadway Restaurant Group Appears to Be Opening New Restaurant in Charlestown's City Square

A local restaurant group is apparently planning to open a new dining spot in Charlestown.

According to a post within the jobs section of the bostonchefs.com site, a new restaurant that will have "a focus on handmade pasta & cheeses, and extensive in-house butchery program, and locally sourced as well as high end Italian ingredients" is looking to open in City Square, hinting that it could be moving into the former Legal Oysteria space based on the fact that the post says the space was "a popular location for years and empty since the pandemic." All Locations of Darwin's Are Closing Down

Last month it was reported that the original location of a local group of cafes would be closing, and now we have learned that all other outlets will be shutting down as well.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, all four locations of Darwin's will be closing permanently, with the original on Mt Auburn Street in Harvard Square shutting its doors on November 22 while the closings of the other shops on Cambridge Street, Massachusetts Avenue, and Putnam Avenue will happen sometime before Christmas. In late October, a note from founders Steven and Isabel Darwin said that the lease at the original location (which first opened in 1993) was up and that they were taking "workload and personal health" into account with their decision, but now Cambridge Day states that the Darwins say "Upon further reflection we have decided to retire from this line of work."

The website for all locations of Darwin's is at https://www.darwinsltd.com/

[November 28 update: According to its social media, the Mt Auburn Street location of Darwin's is now closed, and the other three are slated to shut down on December 22.]

Deep Cuts Deli Is Moving from West Medford to the Former Carroll's Space in Medford Square

Several months ago, it was reported that a deli and nanobrewery in West Medford was looking into moving to a larger space in Arlington. Those plans have fallen through, however, as a move within Medford is now in the works instead.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Deep Cuts Deli is going to be moving from its current home on High Street to a new space in Medford Square, taking over the space on Main Street where Carroll's had been until closing down in August. A message sent to us by the business mentions that renovations are slated to begin in the next couple of weeks and that the new space will include a full dining/taproom area, a kitchen, bar, and 5 bbl brewery while also having a stage for shows and events. More details are expected on the new home for Deep Cuts sometime this week, so stay tuned for additional updates.

Deep Cuts, which opened in West Medford in March of 2021 and had once been briefly located within BearMoose Brewing Company in Everett, had originally been looking to move to the former Tango space on Mass. Ave. in Arlington Center.

The current address for Deep Cuts Deli is 472 High Street while its new location will be at 21 Main Street. Its website can be found at https://www.deepcuts.rocks/

[May 24, 2023 update: A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page says (via an event page) that Deep Cuts is now open in its new home.]

Fields West Plans to Open in Allston

It looks like a new restaurant and bar is on its way to Allston, though details are few for now.

According to a couple of posts within the jobs section of the bostonchefs.com site, Fields West is looking to open at an as-of-yet undisclosed location in Allston, saying that it will have "a focus on shared plates, live entertainment and great beer and wine." No further information has been given on the upcoming dining and drinking spot, and it doesn't look like a licensing hearing has been scheduled for the place as of yet, so keep checking back for updates.

The name "Fields West" may be referring to a painting done by artist Washington Allston (which is where the neighborhood got its name) called "Fields West of Boston," which showed the fields of Allston back around the late 1700s and early 1800s based on information from a Harvard Crimson article.

[February 24, 2023 update: A press release confirms what a source told us, that Fields West will be opening in the former Glenville Stops space at 87 Glenville Avenue, with the release saying it will feature small plates with global influences along with a wide variety of beers and wines. According to a source, Seaport Social opened to the public yesterday in the Seaport District, moving into a space on Northern Avenue within the Park Lane Seaport residential complex. The website for the dining and drinking spot does not give any indication of its opening, so this may be a soft opening for now, and no menu has been posted as of yet, so keep checking back for updates.

Plans for Seaport Social were first announced back in December of 2018, with the original manager listed being Jennifer Glover, though a recent hearing notice shows that the new manager is Adrian Fuentes, who we have been told used to work at the Hard Rock Cafe.

The address for Seaport Social is 225 Northern Avenue, Boston, MA, 02210. Its website is at http://seaportsocial.com/
