Moxies and Grace by Nia Are Both Coming to Boston's Seaport District

It looks like two new dining and drinking spots may be coming to the Boston waterfront.

A tweet from @FortPointer indicates (via a page from @FPNA_Boston) that Moxies hopes to open in the Ora building at 899 Congress Street and Grace by Nia plans to open at One Seaport Square, with the former being a full-service restaurant offering brunch, lunch, and dinner and having both indoor and outdoor seating, and the latter being a spot offering Southern comfort food and featuring live jazz. The notice also mentions that plans for Fort Point Tavern to open in the former Oak + Rowan space (which was mentioned in an earlier article here) have been "withdrawn for consideration," at least for now, while plans for Marcelino's Boutique Bar to open in the Former Daily Catch space--which had also been mentioned here earlier--are still in the works.

@FortPointer states that all of these were discussed in a Tuesday night meeting.

[March 8, 2023 update: Universal Hub reports that the Boston Licensing Board has approved plans for Grace by Nia to open in the Seaport District, and that it will be "a supper club and speakeasy with a full menu."]

Demolition Proposal Hearing Scheduled for 213 Everett Avenue in Chelsea, Which Is the Address for Floramo's Restaurant

A hearing has been scheduled for May 10 for the proposed demolition of a building in Chelsea, and the address happens to be that of an iconic spot known for its ribs and steak tips.

Multiple sources have told us (via a tweet from @ChelseaScanner and an edition of The Chelsea Record) that approval for special permits and variances is being sought for the demolition of the structure at 213 Everett Avenue along with three adjoining lots, with plans for the space possibly being construction of an 11-story research and development lab. The 213 Everett Avenue address is that of Floramo's Restaurant; we reached out to Floramo's for more information earlier today and are waiting to hear back from them.

The notice does mention that the laboratory "does not meet the requirements for lot area, rear and front yard setbacks, minimum aisle width, and number of off-street parking spaces and also exceeds maximum number of stories, and floor area ratio at the premises," which is apparently why the special permits and variances are being requested.

Floramo's, which dates back to the mid-1980s, is known for its grill items, BBQ, and Italian dishes, along with its famous slogan "where the meat falls off the bone." Its website can be found at http://floramos.net/

[May 2 update: It looks like Floramo's will remain in operation in one form or another, as it says the following in a Twitter post: "There is a meeting. It's a proposal. We are not closing. As a matter of fact we're expanding."]

Aram's Cafe in Belmont Has Closed Permanently

A decades-old breakfast and lunch spot in Belmont that was known for its Armenian food has shut down for good, and its closure stems from a mistaken oil delivery.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Aram's Cafe on Trapelo Road has closed its doors permanently, with a Facebook page from the place saying the following:

To our loyal customers, from the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU. Thank you for your loyalty, for the friendships, for the laughs, and all the amazing memories. This was not how we expected our story to end. But nevertheless , we are so grateful for every single day of the last 35 years for the opportunity to serve you and this wonderful community.  May you always remember Aram’s with happy memories and full stomachs.

In January, a delivery driver mistakenly delivered oil to Aram's Cafe, flooding the basement with oil and causing the eatery to close indefinitely.

The address for the now-closed Aram's Cafe was 5 Trapelo Road, Belmont, MA, 02478.

The new location of Honest joins another in Lowell along with other outlets in 14 states around the country, and it focuses on vegetarian fare including dosas and sandwiches.

The Glenville Stops in Allston May Be Reopening

A restaurant and bar in Allston that closed down last fall could be reborn, and it would apparently be under new ownership.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, The Glenville Stops is seeking to reopen, with the notice indicating that Glenville Tavern Services, Inc. is petitioning to transfer its beer and wine license to Allston Rock City, LLC while keeping the Glenville Stops name. The post also says that James Caruso would be the manager while a Google search shows that Fred Starikov is involved with the new parent company; both Caruso and Starikov are part of City Realty, which operates such spots as The Silhouette Lounge and The Tam.

The original incarnation of The Glenville Stops--which first opened in 2014--was known in part for its small plates and beer/wine options.

The address for The Glenville Stops space is 87 Glenville Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.

Update: Doug Bacon Plans to Open New Restaurant in Former Pizzeria Regina Space in Allston

[Ed note: This article was updated to reflect the fact that the name given in the hearing notice is a working name only.]

A new dining spot may be coming to a sprawling space in Allston, and a well-known restaurateur appears to be involved.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, a new restaurant tentatively called Depot Dining is planning to open on Cambridge Street, taking over the former Pizzeria Regina space. The manager listed for the proposed place is Doug Bacon, who is behind a number of restaurants and bars in the local area, including Hopewell Bar & Kitchen, Harry's Bar & Grill, and The Kenmore.

A couple of years ago, it was reported that Great Scott (an iconic--and now-closed--music club) might move into the Regina's space, but those plans apparently fell through at some point.

The address for the proposed new restaurant from Doug Bacon is 353 Cambridge Street, Allston, MA, 02134.

[May 9 update: Universal Hub states that an actual name has not been decided for the restaurant, as Depot Dining is simply a working name.]

Gordon Ramsay Burger Is Opening in Boston

A celebrity chef who opened his very first Boston restaurant earlier this year is bringing another one of his concepts to the city.

According to a press release, Gordon Ramsay is planning to open Gordon Ramsay Burger on North Street, moving into the brand new Canopy by Hilton boutique hotel just off the Greenway by Faneuil Hall and Haymarket Square. The upcoming spot will be a full-service restaurant that offers burgers, hot dogs, fries, house-made sauces, and milkshakes, and the 4,000-square-foot space will include a roof deck on the second level.

Ramsay's Kitchen first opened within the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the Back Bay in January, while another concept--Gordon Ramsay Street Pizza--had been proposed for Fort Point, though those plans have fallen through, at least for the time being.

The address for Gordon Ramsay Burger in Boston is 111 North Street, Boston, MA, 02109. The website for all of Gordon Ramsay's restaurants is at https://www.gordonramsayrestaurants.com/

[July 3, 2023 update: According to a new press release, Gordon Ramsay Burger opens on July 5.]

99 Restaurant & Pub in Somerville Has Closed

Another location of a local chain of family-friendly restaurants has shut down.

According to a source, the 99 Restaurant & Pub in Somerville is no longer in business, with a check on the locations page for the chain seeming to confirm this, as the Cummings Street location is no longer listed. This comes on the heels of the Saugus outlet of the 99 closing earlier this month, though that appears to be more of a move of sorts, as a new one a few miles to the north in Middleton is getting ready to open.

The address for the now-closed 99 Restaurant & Pub in Somerville was 20 Cummings Street, Somerville, MA, 02145. The website for the chain can be found at https://www.99restaurants.com/

Giacomo's in Boston's South End Has Been Sold; Will Eventually Be Renamed Casa Giacomo's

A popular Italian restaurant in the South End of Boston is under new ownership, and its name will undergo a slight change later this year.

According to a post from BosGuy, Giacomo's on Columbus Avenue has been sold to the team behind Kava Neo-Taverna and Ilona (both of which are also in the South End), with the plan being to make renovations to the space and rename it Casa Giacomo's. It looks like the two other locations of Giacomo's in the North End and Melrose will remain open and will not be changing ownership, and that the name change to the South End restaurant will help distinguish it from the others, according to BosGuy.

The address for the South End location of Giacomo's (and eventually Casa Giacomo's) is 431 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA, 02116.

The new location of the eatery is about three blocks south of its former location in the heart of the Financial District on Devonshire Street, and it will join the original Guru the Caterer on Broadway in Somerville's Teele Square. Irish Brewing Boston Is Opening in Norwood

An Irish-themed brewery is planning to open in the southwest suburbs of Boston.

According to a source, Irish Brewing Boston is planning to open in Norwood, taking over the Percival Brewing Company space on Morse Street at the Norwood Space Center. An earlier Patch article says that the business will offer coffee in the morning and craft beer starting after noon (as well as packaged snacks), with Manager Carl Sharpley mentioning that "This is a new concept; it's the first concept of its kind....It's Irish themed, Irish-American themed." The 5,000-square-foot space will have seating for approximately 140 and a small production area for beermaking, and the hope is that it will have outdoor seating during the summer months and a smoker--and Sharpley may also look to sell beer from breweries in Ireland and collaborate with Castle Island Brewing Company to "co-brand beers together as the Norwood breweries."

The website for Percival Brewing Company states that it is looking to reopen in another location.

The address for Irish Brewing Boston is 83 Morse Street, Norwood, MA, 02062. Its website can be found at https://www.irishbrewingboston.com/

Faro Cafe Plans to Open in Cambridge

A new coffee shop and bookstore that gets its inspiration from a beloved Harvard Square spot that closed two years ago is planning to open in a nearby space this summer.

A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants says (via a Cambridge Day article) that Faro Cafe is planning to open on Arrow Street, with owner Henry Hoffstot saying that "We're trying to create a space where we of course sell coffee, but we also foster conversation and have sort of a Cafe Pamplona-style place where people can go and talk." Cambridge Day mentions that the upcoming spot plans to have seating for 24 in two rooms along with space for approximately 50 more outside, and that it hopes to offer live music and talks while serving drinks and having a simple food menu that doesn't require a kitchen.

La Bottega May Be Opening in the T&B Pizza/Turenne Space in Somerville's Union Square

It looks like a pop-up known in part for its gelato may be opening a brick-and-mortar pizza and gelato spot in Somerville, and it would apparently be moving into a space that had been home to combination pizzeria/French bakery-cafe.

According to a source, it appears that La Bottega is planning to open in Union Square in the T&B Pizza/Turenne space on Washington Street, with a page within the city's website seeming to confirm this, indicating that the address given for the new place is the same as that of T&B Pizza/Turenne. Heady Topper and Focal Banger Have Made Their Way Back into the Greater Boston Area

photo of Heady Topper and Focal Banger beers from Thistle and Shamrock, Cambridge, MA.Back during the early days of the pandemic, a couple of Vermont beers with cult-like followings suddenly became available in the local area, only to disappear as quickly as they came. Now beer lovers in the Boston area have another chance to get them, though it could be short-lived once again.

A check on a handful of beer and wine shops in the region indicates that Heady Topper and Focal Banger are available once again, including in Boston, Arlington, Needham, Woburn, Melrose, and other cities and towns locally, and it appears that some restaurants and bars may be offering them as well. The Alchemist brewery's Facebook page--which mentioned back in the spring of 2020 that Heady and Focal would be available in Massachusetts for awhile--has not posted anything about the beers being back this time around, but they are indeed here again, though a person at one beer shop tells us that this may be a "one-time deal."

The Alchemist, which is located in Waterbury and Stowe, VT, is known in part for its award-winning Heady Topper double IPA and Focal Banger IPA.

Season to Taste Restaurant in North Cambridge Plans to Move to Mix-It Restaurant Space

A Cambridge dining spot that is part of a catering space may be moving to a bigger space down the road, replacing another eatery.

According to an article from Cambridge Day, Season to Taste restaurant on Mass. Ave. in North Cambridge is looking to move to the space on Mass. Ave. just south of Porter Square that is currently home to Mix-It Restaurant, with the move possibly more than tripling its capacity from 20 to 70 seats. The post mentions that if approved, the Season to Taste office in the current space would close but the catering license would remain in place for "drop-off catering," while the current dining room may see a new concept that would reportedly be more casual than Season To Taste restaurant's farm-to-table concept. If all goes well, the new location could be opening around Labor Day in early September.

Mix-It Restaurant, which opened approximately eight years ago, is known for its Asian fusion fare.

The current address for Season to Taste restaurant is 2447 Massachusetts Avenue while its new address would be 1678 Massachusetts Ave. The website for Season to Taste restaurant is at https://seasoncambridge.com/

Maverick's in East Boston Has Closed; Maverick House Tavern Appears to Be Replacing It

A restaurant and bar in East Boston has shut down for good and is apparently being replaced by another spot, though there appears to have been a conflict that resulted in the change.

According to a source, Maverick's at Maverick Marketplace is no longer in business, with a check on its website saying "unfortunately, we are closed permanently" while also stating "Please be aware: We have no affiliation with 'Maverick House Tavern'" and ending with "It's been a wild ride, Eastie. We love you." The Facebook page for Maverick's appears to have been taken over by the aforementioned Maverick House Tavern while another Facebook page called "The Real Maverick's" shows many of the same posts from 2020 and earlier which can also still be seen on the Maverick House Tavern page. Our source mentions that the Instagram page for Maverick's goes into detail about a dispute with the landlord and that they have decided to move on and say goodbye to Maverick's, with a post discussing the closure being here.

A new restaurant is planning to open in a brand new hotel in Somerville, and a well-known local name appears to be involved.

According to a tweet from @geoffjentry, Josephine is looking to open within Cambria Hotel on Somerville Avenue, with a licensing commission page within the city's website showing that the manager listed is Michael Scelfo (Alden & Harlow, Longfellow Bar, Waypoint). In addition, the parent company shown in the page is HK Food Group, which indicates that local restaurateur Brian Lesser might be behind the place as well, though this has not been confirmed as of yet, and very little additional information on the restaurant has been given, so keep checking back for updates.

The address for the proposed Josephine would be 515 Somerville Avenue, Somerville, MA, 02143.

Update: Oak + Rowan in Boston's Fort Point Neighborhood Has Closed; Fort Point Tavern May Replace It

[Ed note: This article was updated on April 20 to reflect new information given on the restaurant that could be moving into the space.]

An upscale Fort Point restaurant has shut down after being in business for a bit more than five years.

According to a message sent from local restaurant critic and food/drinks feature writer MC Slim JB, Oak + Rowan on A Street is no longer in business, with an Instagram post from owner Nancy Caswell saying the following:

It is with great sadness that I announce the sale of Oak and Rowan. We all mourn when we lose one of our favorite restaurants because they provide us with so much more than food. They also nourish our soul, and when they are gone, part of the soul of the neighborhoods in which they resided is gone as well....I want to thank every wonderful guest and employee for supporting us. We welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests and employed incredible people over these years. I am extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant and that this amazing community allowed us to grow and succeed for as long as we did.

In the post, Caswell wishes "new ownership the best of luck," which indicates that a new dining spot will open in the space, though no details have been given as of yet.

Nancy Caswell and the Caswell Restaurant Group are also behind Brine in Newburyport.

The address for the now-closed Oak + Rowan was 321 A Street, Boston, MA, 02210.

(Ed note: This story was first reported by Eater Boston.)

[April 20 update: A licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website mentions that Fort Point Tavern plans to open in the former Oak + Rowan space, with the manager listed being William Falaro of the Broadway Restaurant Group (Lincoln Tavern, Loco Taqueria, Capo, Fat Baby, Hunter's Kitchen). The hearing notice also seems to hint that a second restaurant--or restaurant space--may be part of the plans as well, though more should be known on April 27 when the hearing is slated to take place.]

[May 11 update: A tweet from @FortPointer indicates that plans for Fort Point Tavern to open in the former Oak + Rowan space may have fallen through, at least for now, as a page from @FPNA_Boston says that it was "withdrawn for consideration."]

The Breakfast Club Is Being Reborn in Malden, Replacing the Doo Wop Diner

(This has been confirmed by Neighborhood View.) The Breakfast Club had previously mentioned on social media that while it was leaving its space on Western Avenue in Allston on January 31, it said that "This isn't goodbye, it's see you soon and we can't wait to share more about what is in store for The Breakfast Club in the near future."

The Breakfast Club first opened in Allston more than 20 years ago.

The address for the new location of The Breakfast Club is 269 Main Street, Malden, MA, 02148.

A Cat Cafe May Be Coming to Beacon Hill

Several years ago, the city of Boston saw its very first cat cafe debut, though it shut down permanently after a couple of years in business. Now it looks like another cat cafe may be on its way, with this one coming to another part of the city.

According to a message sent from local writer Megan Johnson, signs have been posted at a storefront in Beacon Hill saying that "A Sanctuary Cafe" with "coffee, books & cats" is on its way to Charles Street, with a second sign describing what exactly a cat cafe is. Based on the picture sent to us, it appears that the cat cafe might be moving into a building across from The Sevens, between Pinckney Street and Mt. Vernon Street, and the first sign mentions that the place plans to open sometime this summer.

PURR Cat Cafe, which opened on Chestnut Hill Avenue in Brighton in 2017, was a place where people could hang out with adoptable shelter cats while bringing in food or beverages; the cafe shut down in late 2019.

[October 12 update: A Beacon Hill Times article mentions that Beacon Hill resident and prospective cat cafe owner Brittany Baker talked about the cafe in a virtual abutters meeting in late September, saying that the two-story business at 80 Charles Street would include a cafe, bookstore, and an upper and lower "cat lounge" in a space that had formerly been home to a bank. Baker states that the bookstore and cafe would be free to enter and separate from the areas with cats, while the cat lounge would have 10 "resident cats" and require reservations with an hourly rate--and it wouldn't offer pet adoptions or allow customers to bring their own pets. Twelve Hours, which closed earlier this year, offered dishes with Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean, and Vietnamese influences.

Carrot Flower in Jamaica Plain Is Closing

A plant-based cafe and juice bar in Jamaica Plain is shutting down.

According to a message from Adam of Universal Hub, Carrot Flower on Centre Street is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from owner Audrey White and the team saying the following:

Dear Friends, I'm writing with great sadness to announce that Carrot Flower will be closing permanently on May 23. Our lease is ending, and we've made the incredibly difficult decision not to renew. There are many reasons why we're closing, but it boils down to the fact that we haven't found a way to be profitable after four years. This might surprise some of you since we're busier than ever and people love our food. Unfortunately, being busy and popular does not always lead to profitability, especially in the food service industry....I will truly miss our many regulars who visit us daily and whom I've come to consider friends. I'll still be in JP and hope to see you around.

Carrot Flower is known in part for its smoothies, juices, soups, salads, wraps, and bowls.
