Carvel Ice Cream Has Returned to South Station in Boston

A year and a half ago, a chain of ice cream shops closed its only Boston location, but it is now back in business.

According to a source (Sarah Wu), Carvel Express is open once again at South Station, and as was the case before, it is apparently sharing its space with Auntie Anne's. The ice cream shop had shut down around the late summer/early fall of 2020, as did Auntie Anne's (which features pretzels), which meant that at that time, the only remaining places in Massachusetts that were serving their products back then were Moe's Southwest Grill in Waltham and Shrewsbury, though there are now Carvel shops in Natick and Wrentham.

Carvel, which is based in Atlanta, first started out back in 1934. Their website is at https://www.carvel.com/

Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Andover Has Closed

A chain of BBQ spots has closed its only location inside Route 495--and its only remaining outlet in all of New England.

According to a source (Aron Levy), Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Andover is no longer in business, with a check on the chain's website indicating that the Main Street location has indeed been removed from the site. Dickey's first opened in Andover a bit more than a year ago, and about ten years ago we had reported that the chain was looking to open a couple of locations in the Greater Boston area; it appears that the only other outlet in the state was in Seekonk, but that one is shuttered as well.

The address for the now-closed Dickey's Barbecue Pit in Andover was 209 N Main Street (Suite 108), Andover, MA, 01810. The website for the chain can be found at https://www.dickeys.com/

A Newton dining spot that features a mix of cuisines is shutting down.

According to a couple of sources, Ellana's Kitchen & More in Newton Centre is closing its doors, with a Facebook post from the Pelham Street eatery saying the following:

With great sadness, we would like to announce that we have decided to permanently close Ellana's Kitchen. Hard Rock Cafe in Boston Is Closing

A chain of music-themed restaurants is closing its Boston location.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, the Hard Rock Cafe near Faneuil Hall is shutting down, with a Boston Globe article saying that it will close in June when its lease expires, though Jonathan Goldman--who is a spokesperson for the parent company--hints that they could reopen elsewhere in or around Boston, saying that they are "open to having another location within the market, if the right space can be identified." The Boston location of the Hard Rock Cafe first opened on Clarendon Street in the Back Bay in 1989 but moved to the Faneuil Hall area in 2007.

Update: Dynasty Hot Pot to Open in Boston's Chinatown

[Ed note: This article was updated on May 26 to reflect the actual name of the place.]

A new hot pot place is looking to open in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, a restaurant that they say would be called Dalongyi Hot Pot is planning to open on Hudson Street--though Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub says that the name will actually be Dynasty Hot Pot and that Dailongy Hot Pot, Inc. appears to be the name of the parent company--and the address indicates that it could be moving into the old China Pavilion space, though Adam has learned that it would actually go into the former Ginza space next door. (China Pavilion is a long-closed restaurant whose sign can still be seen on a building next to the empty lot where it had once been, based on a Sampan article from Richard Auffrey.)

As mentioned here earlier, a restaurant called Dalongyi Hot Pot had been planning to open in the former Le's space on Brighton Avenue in Allston; it is not known if those plans--which were first announced last summer--are still in the works, nor is it known if there is any connection between that place and this spot.

The address for the proposed Dynasty Hot Pot in Chinatown is 14B Hudson Street, Boston, MA, 02111.

According to a source, Sullivan's at Castle Island in South Boston is planning to open an outlet at Hanover Crossing, a new mixed-use development on Route 53 in Hanover that had been the site of the Hanover Mall. Ice Cream Shops Scramble After Richardson's Briefly Stops Ice Cream Production

One of the best-known ice cream brands in the local area has dropped some worrisome news just as the temperatures start to skyrocket, and it is causing problems for shops across the region that depend on their products.

According to a source, Richardson's Ice Cream briefly stopped production of its products with The Inside Scoop in Bedford, NH, saying that "I received a call from them to place our weekly order and was told they had to stop all ice cream production until end of May/beginning of June because they can't get their ingredients to make it!" while Leavitt's Ice Cream in Atkinson, NH, mentions that "We received information this week from Richardson's that they are not able to make any more ice cream due to a shortage of a necessary ingredient for their custom recipe." Our source tells us that at least one regional shop (which will remain unnamed) is looking to get their ice cream from another source for now, while The Inside Scoop says "we are fully stocked but just wanted to give you a heads up your favorites might be MIA for a week or two" and Leavitt's states that "Once our supply of Richardson's Ice Cream runs out, we will be selling another premium ice cream until Richardson’s is back up and running!"

As our source tells us, this only affects shops that carry Richardson's Ice Cream, so call ahead if you're unsure where your favorite shop's ice cream comes from.

The website for the Middleton-based Richardson's can be found at http://www.richardsonsicecream.com/

[May 21 update: WBZ 1030 reports that Richardson's has started production of its ice cream again after having to stop due to a shipment from its sugar supplier falling through a few weeks back. The article says spokesperson Ned Bolth mentioned in a statement that "We are working hard to replenish our stock so that we can serve all our customers as usual in the coming days....We are not there yet, but will do all in our power to get there as soon as possible."]

Apex Bar and Lounge to Open in Boston's Financial District

It looks like a new cocktail bar and lounge is on its way to downtown Boston, and it will apparently be part of a multi-concept cannabis dispensary with a former mayoral candidate behind it.

According to a licensing board page within the city's website, Apex Bar and Lounge is planning to open in the Financial District, taking over at least part of the space on State Street that had been home to Little Rose Taco Bar, and before that, Kamakura. An earlier Dig Boston article mentioned that Tito Jackson is behind the place, which, according to a media statement, is called Apex Noire and will be "part cannabis dispensary and wholly an experience," including a dispensary space, an art/music gallery, and the cocktail bar itself, and based on the hearing notice, it appears that Apex Bar and Lounge plans to be on the 6th and 7th floor of the building, with the top floor being a roof deck.

Tito Jackson ran for mayor in 2017 and he has also been a city council member.

North End Creamery Is Opening in Boston's North End

It looks like a new place for ice cream is coming to the North End of Boston, and a familiar name would apparently be behind it.

According to a licensing board page within the city's website, North End Creamery is planning to open on Salem Street, with the notice showing that Sandra Russo is listed as the manager. This is the same Sandra Russo who ran the nearby (and now-closed) Lulu's Sweet Shoppe on Parmenter Street, and who was also behind the now-closed Lulu's Kitchen on Blackstone Street in the Haymarket Square area.

More information should be coming out on North End Creamery May 25, which is when the hearing is scheduled to take place.

The address for North End Creamery is 121 Salem Street, Boston, MA, 02113.

Yellow Door Taqueria Is Replacing Flann O'Brien's in Boston's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood

It looks like a pair of Mexican restaurants will be joined by a third, with this one taking over the space where a popular Irish pub has been.

According to a licensing commission hearing page within the City of Boston website, Yellow Door Taqueria is planning to open in the city's Brigham Circle/Mission Hill Neighborhood, moving into the Flann O'Brien's space on Tremont Street. If approved, the new location of the Mexican spot would join others in the South End and  Dorchester's Lower Mills.

The future of Flann O'Brien's had been in question for awhile now, as it appeared that the pub was being sold in late 2020 and early 2021. At that time, it looked like it could end up reopening under new ownership.

The address for the new Yellow Door Taqueria (and Flann O'Brien's) is 1619 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02120. The website for the other two locations of the Mexican restaurant can be found at https://www.yellowdoortaqueria.com/

We have been told that a different concept is slated to open in its space, though we are holding off on posting details until it has been completely confirmed.

The address for the White Horse Tavern was 116 Brighton Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134.
