Toad and Christopher's in Cambridge's Porter Square Have Apparently Been Sold

Earlier this year, it was reported that a restaurant and a music club in Cambridge were both facing an uncertain future, but now we have learned that the music club will remain in place, though we are still waiting to hear specific details on the restaurant.

According to an article in The Boston Globe, both Toad and Christopher's in Porter Square have apparently been sold to an unnamed buyer for approximately $3 million, and the Toad space will likely open soon after temporarily closing down on September 16, though it is possible that it could have a different name. It appears that the Christopher's space will also reopen, as current co-owner Holly Heslop says that the new owner is a restaurant investor who wants to keep Toad and the restaurant as two separate places.

Toad is a bar and no-cover music club that has featured countless local acts over the years while Christopher's, which has been closed since the start of the pandemic after being in operation for more than 40 years, has been known for its classic American fare and cozy digs (including a fireplace).

Toad is at 1912 Massachusetts Avenue while Christopher's space is at 1920 Massachusetts Avenue.

[September 18 update: A check on the place confirms that Toad is now closed.]

Hornstra Farms in Norwell Purchases Peaceful Meadows in Whitman

The family behind a farm on the South Shore that includes an ice cream stand has bought another ice cream stand a couple of towns away.

Based on information from a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page (and confirmed by a Facebook post from the Whitman Police Department), Hornstra Farms in Norwell has purchased Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream in Whitman for $1,750,000 in an auction that took place today. As mentioned in an article last month, the auction included Peaceful Meadows' ice cream stand, 55 acres of agricultural land, a single-family home, and a 2-family home, though Hornstra Farms bought only the ice cream stand and the land (the police department said that "the two lots/houses across the street are up next"). It is not known what kinds of changes (if any) might be coming to the ice cream stand, nor is it known whether its name will remain the same, so stay tuned for updates.

The ice cream stand at Peaceful Meadows dates back to 1962, though the farm itself was established several decades earlier.

The address for the Peaceful Meadows property is 60 Bedford Street, Whitman, MA, 02382.

Boloco Closes Its Berklee Location in Boston; Financial District and Boston Common Locations Are Closing Before End of Year

A local chain of restaurants known in part for its burritos and bowls is closing one of its Boston locations today, and two other Boston outlets will soon be shutting down as well, leaving one remaining within the city--and even that one's future is up in the air.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Boloco is closing its restaurant on Boylston Street by the Berklee College of Music at 5:00 PM, with a note within the Facebook page of the chain saying that its locations on Congress Street in the Financial District and Boylston Street by Boston Common will be shutting down before the end of 2023. The note does mention that the outlet at Boston Children's Hospital will remain open for now, as will its Hanover, NH, restaurant, though a post from co-founder John Pepper hints that the future of those two locations may be in question as they both have "leases currently in negotiation and facing some uncertainty."

Boloco's roots date back approximately 25 years, with the Boloco brand replacing "The Wrap" in 2005; there had once been a number of locations throughout the Greater Boston area and elsewhere in New England.

The website for Boloco can be found at https://boloco.com/

[November 24 update: According to a source (Ron Newman), the Boylston Street location of Boloco by Boston Common is now closed, with the website for the business showing that that outlet is no longer shown on the site.]

Frank in Beverly Has Closed for the Time Being; Future of Restaurant Unknown

A North Shore dining spot that has a well-known local restaurateur behind it has shuttered, and it isn't known what might become of the place.

Based on information from a source, a Facebook poster who works at the place, and a now-deleted post from the business itself, Frank in Beverly is closed for the time being, and it looks like owner Frank McClelland is planning to do some sort of restructuring with the hope being to open back up at some point. No reason has been given for its closure, nor is it known what changes could be coming if/when it does reopen, so stay tuned for updates.

Frank first opened its doors in 2019, a year after McClelland closed L'Espalier in the Back Bay of Boston; in addition to the Beverly restaurant, McClelland also runs Frankie's Fat Tomatoes at Hub Hall by Boston's North Station.

A local group of vegetarian dining spots has said goodbye to one of its locations.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Clover on Boylston Street in Boston's Back Bay has shuttered, with a post from the business indicating that the closure is due to a combination of taking a hit from the pandemic (the location opened in the December of 2019) and a rent issue with the landlord. The post says that the location (which is also known as CloverBBY) is closing "immediately," though its employees will be moved to other locations of Clover, while owner Ayr Muir refers customers of the Boylston Street location to a nearby outlet at the Prudential Center.

An award-winning ramen spot in Brookline is going to be opening a new location in the southern suburbs of Boston.

According to multiple posters on social media, Ganko Ittetsu Ramen is opening in Braintree, moving into a space within a strip mall on Quincy Avenue that had been home to South Shore Desi Market. A Patriot Ledger article from March mentioned Ganko's plans while saying it could open in July, though it has not opened as of yet, and its original location inside the arcade building on Harvard Street in Coolidge Corner has been closed since earlier this month for repairs.

The address for the upcoming Ganko Ittetsu Ramen in Braintree is 224 Quincy Avenue, Braintree, MA, 02184. The website for the original location in Brookline can be found at https://gankoramen.com/

Nusr-et Steakhouse Space in Downtown Boston Is for Lease; the Restaurant May Open in a New Location

It looks like the Boston location of a group of trendy steakhouses is saying farewell to its space, as the space is now on the market.

According to a source, the Nusr-et Steakhouse space on Arlington Street is for lease, with a Boston Realty Advisors page showing photos of the restaurant while saying "turn-key restaurant space for lease" and including a link to a brochure and another link with additional information. Nusret Gökçe (AKA Salt Bae) first opened the Boston location of Nusr-et Steakhouse in 2020, taking over the space where Nahita had been, and before that, Liquid Art House; the restaurant is located on the southern edge of Park Plaza near where Bay Village, the Back Bay, and the South End meet.

The address for Nusr-et Steakhouse--which remains open for now--is 100 Arlington Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

Brassica Kitchen + Cafe in Jamaica Plain May Expand into the Former Dogwood Cafe Space

A tiny Jamaica Plain eatery that is a cafe by day and a restaurant by night could be getting a lot bigger, as it is eyeing the space next door that had been home to another dining and drinking spot until closing earlier this year.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Brassica Kitchen + Cafe in the Forest Hills section of JP is seeking approval to expand into the former Dogwood Cafe space next door. If it gets the green light, Brassica would end up having four dining rooms, two bars, and two patios, with seating for 126 inside and 43 more outside.

Brassica Kitchen + Cafe first opened in 2016, taking over the space where Fazenda Cafe had once been; the dining spot offers coffee, tea, and donuts during the day on Thursdays and Fridays and dinner and drinks Wednesday through Saturday evenings while also offering a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

The address for Brassica's current space is 3710 Washington Street while the former Dogwood Cafe space is at 3712 Washington Street. The website for Brassica is at https://www.brassicakitchen.com/

Plans Still Being Looked at for a Restaurant to Open at the Josiah Smith Tavern Site in Weston

An historic building in the western suburbs of Boston could still become the site of a restaurant thanks in part to the efforts of a nonprofit group.

According to someone involved with Friends of the Josiah Smith Tavern, plans are in place to have a restaurant operator open a dining spot at the Josiah Smith Tavern site in Weston Center, with the proposed restaurant possibly including dining areas on the ground floor, a front and back patio, and a second-floor ballroom. We have been told that the town has given its approval for the space to be used as a restaurant (and the town actually owns the property), though any final lease is subject to approval by the town's Select Board while the buildout would be subject to final approval by Historic New England.

Proposals to open a restaurant at the site have been given since at least 2009, when we first reported on the possibility of a dining spot opening within the space; the tavern itself dates back to 1757 and was originally used as a stagecoach stop and meeting place.

The address for the Josiah Smith Tavern site is 358 Boston Post Road, Weston, MA, 02493. More on the plans for the space can be found here.

News Elsewhere: Warren's Lobster House in Kittery Is Putting Its Property Up for Sale

A renowned seafood spot north of Boston is putting its home on the market.

According to a source, the space in which Warren's Lobster House in Kittery, ME, resides is going up for sale, with a Facebook post from the restaurant saying the following:

We have signed an option agreement to sell the property in Kittery and will have a better idea of what the prospective buyer's intentions are by early September if not sooner....We are not selling the business, the intellectual property (trademarks, copyrights, etc.) or the right to operate as WLH at a different location (it is early in the process and we haven't fully considered the various possibilities).

The post does mention that Warren's plans to remain open "well into 2024," while also saying that "Should the prospective buyer decide to not move forward it is still our intention to list the property for sale because ultimately it is no longer sustainable to operate and maintain a building located on a pier over the water."

Warren's, which first opened in 1940 as a lobster stand, is a 350-seat restaurant on the Piscataqua River that features a variety of seafood options including clam chowder, lobster rolls, boiled lobster, baked stuffed shrimp, seafood casserole, fish and chips, baked lobster mac and cheese, and more.

The address for Warren's Lobster House is 11 Water Street, Kittery, ME, 03904. Its website can be found at https://www.lobsterhouse.com/

Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant in Belmont Are Up for Sale

The flagship location of a group of specialty beer shops and its sibling beer hall are both being put on the market.

According to a source (Mark Gurwell), Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch Restaurant on Leonard Street in Belmont Center are for sale, with a note on the website of Craft Beer Cellar saying the following:

We have had the time of our lives being your local beer & wine store, and now your beer hall & gathering place. But, we feel that the time has come for us to get back to ourselves, each other, and to look towards building on our experiences to further explore excellence in hospitality, in the retail and restaurant segment (Craft Beer Cellar Co), and beer industry education, in a new light....After 13 years of selling and supporting amazing beer, making treasured friends, and proudly watching some of our employees go on to become change-makers in this industry, it feels like the right time.

The note mentions that Craft Beer Cellar and Trinktisch will likely be sold separately, and it sounds like the beer shop would apparently remain part of the franchise operation; it also appears that the plan may be for Trinktisch to remain in operation under that brand, as the beer hall's website says that "We look forward to assisting the new owner(s) in obtaining all the information they need to run Trinktisch, not just successfully, but better, in it’s new chapter."

The Belmont location of Craft Beer Cellar moved from its original location just up the street to its current space in 2020, while Trinktisch debuted the following year.

Windward Grille Restaurant in Essex Has Closed; Vita Bella Ristorante to Replace It

[Ed note: This article was updated on August 14 to reflect confirmation that a new restaurant is indeed moving into the space.]

A North Shore restaurant that resided in an historic space has closed down.

According to a source, Windward Grille Restaurant in Essex is now shuttered, confirming what we had heard earlier this summer about its pending closure. The dining spot, which was located on Route 133 east of the town center, was known mainly for its classic American fare and regional dishes, including a variety of seafood options; the farmhouse in which it resided dates back to the 1600s.

Our source tells us that an Italian restaurant may be going into the space, though we haven't been able to confirm this as of yet.

The address for the now-closed Windward Grille Restaurant was 109 Eastern Avenue (Route 133), Essex, MA, 01929.

Taco Bell Cantina Is Opening in the Former Great Scott Space in Allston

It looks like the "urban cantina" concept of a chain of Mexican dining spots is taking over the space where a landmark music club had been, though plans are in their early stages.

According to a source, Taco Bell Cantina is looking to open in Allston, moving into the former Great Scott space on Commonwealth Avenue and being a relatively short distance from its other Boston-area outlets in Brookline's Coolidge Corner and by BU on the Boston/Brookline line. A Facebook post from the Allston Civic Association says that a Virtual Abutters Meeting is being held this evening on the proposal, which apparently focuses on the acquisition of a common victualler license and liquor license for the place.

Great Scott, which started out in 1976 and became one of the most popular music clubs in the Boston area, shut down during the start of the pandemic in 2020; there had been hope that it may be able to open back up, though it remains closed to this day.

The address for the new Taco Bell Cantina in Allston is 1222 Commonwealth Avenue, Allston, MA, 02134. More information on the concept can be found at https://www.tacobell.com/news/fast-social-restaurants
