Confirmed: Dick's Last Resort at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston Has Closed

It looks like the Boston location of a restaurant/bar chain that was known for its purposely rude staff and its party atmosphere has closed its doors.

According to a source within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Dick's Last Resort at Faneuil Hall Marketplace has shut down, with a tweet from Only In Boston saying that the dining and drinking spot "closed for good last Sunday after fifteen years in Quincy Market at Faneuil Hall Marketplace." Phone calls to the place go unanswered this afternoon, while a Google search has it labeled as "permanently closed," and a post within Boston's Wicked North Shore says that "Dick's Boston had reopened but today decision was made to shut down," though they mention that a rep from another location indicates \it could return at some point if "things changed." We have reached out to Faneuil Hall itself and are waiting to hear back from them to see if they have more information, so keep checking back for updates.

The Boston location of Dick's Last Resort had once been located on Huntington Avenue in the Back Bay.

The website for the chain can be found at https://dickslastresort.com/

California Pizza Kitchen Files for Bankruptcy

A chain of pizza spots with five locations in the Greater Boston area is in financial trouble.

According to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting, California Pizza Kitchen has filed for bankruptcy, with an article from the restaurantbusinessonline.com site saying that the chain is "facing months of unpaid leases" and has a "dwindling amount of cash," and is looking to close outlets that are unprofitable while cutting back on its debt. The post mentions that CPK has been hit by the increased popularity of fast-casual restaurants as well as takeout and delivery, and the COVID-19 pandemic has played a big role as well, with CEO Jim Hyatt saying that "No restaurateur in the world...has been unaffected by the COVID-19 pandemic....For many restaurants, the COVID-19 pandemic will be the greatest challenge they will ever face."

It is not yet known if any local outlets of California Pizza Kitchen could close because of the bankruptcy filing; currently, locations can be found at the Prudential Center in Boston's Back Bay as well as in Braintree, Lynnfield, Natick, and Wellesley. The website for the chain is at https://order.cpk.com/

Nu Burger Opens in the Former Craigie Burger Space at Time Out Market in Boston's Fenway

Earlier this month, it was reported that a burger-focused offshoot of an award-winning restaurant had closed permanently. Now we have learned that a new burger spot has moved into the space.

According to a press release, Nu Burger is now open in the former Craigie Burger space at Time Out Market in the Fenway section of Boston. The new eatery offers burgers with global influences, with Nina Festekjian of anoush'ella in the South End being behind the place. Nu Burger debuts today with the reopening of Time Out Market, which had been closed temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Craigie Burger announced its closure approximately four weeks ago, with owner Tony Maws saying at the time, "It's a precarious situation: It's a market, and what makes that concept so special is the building. With no Red Sox and no students, [the dining spot could not remain in business]." Maws, who is behind Craigie on Main in Cambridge, first opened the burger spot at Time Out Market in June of 2019.

Pret A Manger Has Closed All of Its Shops in Boston

It looks like a London-based chain of sandwich shops has said farewell to Boston.

According to a source, Pret A Manger has closed all of its stores within the city, including in the Financial District (Arch Street, Federal Street, Franklin Street), South Station, Boylston Street in the Back Bay, and Longwood Avenue in the Longwood medical area. Calls placed to all locations seem to confirm this, as all but one have disconnected their phones, and we have now been told by the chain that the Boston locations are closed "permanently," though the message does say that they do hope to return to the city.

We have also been told this afternoon by a source that 30 UK locations of Pret A Manger will be closed as well, according to a BBC article.

Pret a Manger first started out in England in the 1980s, with approximately 90 locations currently found in the United States. The website for its U.S. outlets can be found at https://www.pret.com/en-US

O'Brien's Pub in Allston Is Up for Sale, Plans to Eventually Move to Another Space

A popular spot for live music is on the selling block, though it looks like it will move to another location at some point.

According to an article from Vanyaland, O'Brien's Pub in Allston is up for sale, with a real estate listing on loop.net showing that the Harvard Avenue building in which it resides (which is part of a five-parcel lot) is being sold. Vanyaland mentions that the bar and the property will actually be sold as two separate entities, and that O'Brien's could remain open for two to three years in its current home at which point the new property owner would start working on the space.

O'Brien's general manager Tim Philbin tells Vanyaland that owner Frank Strenk--who also owned the now-closed music club Great Scott--is planning to retire and that the new owners of the pub would open O'Briens in a new space, though it is not known who the new owners might be, nor is it known where it might reopen.

Status of Stacks Espresso Bar in Newton Highlands Appears to Be in Question

The future of the sole Boston-area location of a small group of espresso spots seems to be unknown right now.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Stacks Espresso Bar in Newton Highlands appears to be closed for good, though a check on the website for the business seems to give conflicting information, with one page showing only the Lark Street outlet in Albany while another page shows both Lark Street and Broadway locations in Albany and another in Troy along with the Newton Highlands shop. Phone calls to the Walnut Street store are not able to go through, and a message sent to the company last week has not yet been answered, so stay tuned for any updates as they come in.

A Facebook page from the business does mention that the Troy and Newton Highlands outlets of Stacks Espresso Bar were closed for the foreseeable future as of March 19, while the two Albany shops were said to remain open at the time.

Craft Beer Cellar Team Is Opening Trinktisch Restaurant and Bar in Belmont; Retail Shop Moving Into Space As Well

Earlier this year, it was reported that the original location of a group of specialty beer shops is moving to a larger space up the street. Now we have learned that the people behind the business will also be opening a restaurant and bar within the new space as well.

According to an article from Wicked Local, Trinktisch is opening in the former Foodies's market space on Leonard Street in Belmont Center, while Craft Beer Cellar--whose team is behind the new dining and drinking spot--is opening there as well. The post mentions that Trinktisch will take up 12,240 feet of space while Craft Beer Cellar will have 4,000 square feet of space (which is well more than double the size of its current shop on Leonard Street) and that the restaurant and bar will have a full liquor license. Detailed information on Trinktisch--which means "drinking table"--has not yet been given, so stay tuned for updates, including what might be on its menu and when it may open. [Ed note--the beer shop is now open in the space.]

Craft Beer Cellar first opened in Belmont in 2010 and has since expanded both regionally and nationwide via franchised stores. Its website is at https://craftbeercellar.com/

Framingham Beer Works May Have Closed for Good

It looks like a location of a local group of brewpubs may have shut down permanently.

According to an article from the Framingham Source, Framingham Beer Works is no longer in operation, with Beer Works attorney Paul Sporn saying that "The pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on business. The restaurant industry was already facing a myriad of challenges before the pandemic, but the pandemic made it impossible to move forward in Framingham." The exact status of the other four locations of Beer Works is unknown right now, as the Boston (North Station/West End and Fenway), Hingham, and Salem outlets remain temporarily closed. [Ed note: The Hingham location is now closed as well.]

Framingham Beer Works first opened its doors in 2013.

The address for the now-closed Framingham Beer Works was 345 Cochituate Road, Framingham, MA, 01701. The website for the other locations can be found at https://beerworks.net/

City Works Eatery and Pour House Is Now Open at Arsenal Yards in Watertown

A small group of dining and drinking spots that was supposed to open its first Boston-area location just as the coronavirus outbreak hit is now open for business.

According to a source, City Works Eatery & Pour House has officially opened at Arsenal Yards in East Watertown, with an earlier Patch article confirming this. The new place offers classic American fare and pub grub along with a wide variety of craft beer options, with an earlier article here saying that the group of eateries claims to be the "best beer bars" in the United States.

The Watertown location of City Works Eatery & Pour House had been in the works since early 2018, and the plan was for it to have its grand opening in mid-March of this year, right around when Governor Charlie Baker ordered restaurants in Massachusetts to close down their dining areas due to the pandemic.

The Oceanview of Nahant Is Now Open to the Public for Dinner on Weekends

A wedding venue on the North Shore that is known in part for its spectacular water views is now a restaurant of sorts, serving dinner to the public on weekends.

A poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page states (via the Facebook page for the place) that the Oceanview of Nahant has introduced a "Supper Club" where diners can sit in a tent overlooking the ocean and order from a prix fixe menu that includes an appetizer, salad, main entree, and dessert while also being able to choose from a list of beer, wine, and cocktail options. (We have been told that their outdoor deck is open to the public as well.) The Supper Club is generally set up on Saturdays and Sundays, though it is best to check ahead in advance in case special events are taking place at the venue on a given day.

The address for the Oceanview of Nahant is 0 Willow Road, Nahant, MA, 01908. Its website can be found at https://oceanviewofnahant.com/

Brockton Beer Company Plans to Open a Taproom

A brewer south of Boston is looking to open its very own taproom, and is currently seeking people to invest in the project.

According to a page within the Mainvest website, Brockton Beer Company is planning to open a "community-focused" taproom at an as-of-yet undisclosed location, with the page mentioning that "Founder and CEO, Pierre Alexandre, has worked with his team to bring Brockton Beer Company from idea, to distribution, to brick and mortar, working to give Brockton the community gathering place it deserves." A check on the company's website shows that it redirects to a Mailchimp page that states that "We are excited to announce that we have projects in the works.  Its been a long couple of months and we have missed you all.  Please be on lookout for some exciting things coming your way." An earlier Enterprise article had mentioned that Brockton Beer Company had been looking to open in a long-vacant commercial building on Frederick Douglass Avenue in the downtown area of Brockton but those plans fell through due to high renovation costs. (The article mentions that the brewery was hoping to find another location downtown, while we have been told by the brewery that their hope is to find a space that has room for both a taproom and a brewing area.)

Currently, Brockton Beer Company collaborates with other breweries to produce its beers, with a majority of it being brewed at Article Fifteen in Weymouth; its beers can be found at the breweries it works with and at special events in Brockton. (Its website is at https://www.brocktonbeer.com/)

[May 27, 2022 update: A Facebook post from the business indicates that Brockton Beer Company will open its doors at 121 Main Street on Thursday, June 2.]

Jimmy John's in Boston's North Station/West End Area Has Apparently Closed

It looks like yet another Boston-area location of an Illinois-based chain of sandwich shops has closed, and now it appears that only three outlets remain in the region.

(Locations in Boston's Fenway/Audubon Circle, Allston/Brighton, Newton, Salem, Watertown, Quincy, and Braintree have closed over the past few years.)

Jimmy John's first opened its outlet near North Station in 2015; the chain started out in Charleston, IL, back in 1983.

Cocktails-to-Go Bill Signed into Law, Allowing Massachusetts Restaurants to Offer Mixed Drinks for Takeout

After a long wait, restaurants in Massachusetts can finally offer cocktails for takeout.

According to a tweet from State Senator Diana DiZoglio, Governor Baker has just signed the cocktails-to-go bill into law, with this allowing dining spots to sell mixed drinks to customers for off-premises consumption as long as they are in sealed containers and sold with food purchases--and no more than two cocktails can be sold per entree. An earlier article from NBC Boston said that the bill was passed by the House on June 3, but it took until July 10 to get through the Senate.

A law allowing beer and wine to-go was passed this spring as a way to help restaurants and bars as they struggled with the shutdown that was put in place in March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Locations of Joe's American Bar & Grill in Woburn and Dedham Have Apparently Closed

A small local group of family-friendly restaurants continues to shrink, and it now appears that only two remain in operation.

According to a source, the Woburn location of Joe's American Bar & Grill is no longer in operation, with a check on the place within the locations section of the page indicating that both the Woburn and Dedham locations have been removed. We have reached out to the chain to confirm that the two outlets have indeed closed for good and will post any updates that come in.

Assuming that the Woburn and Dedham locations of Joe's are now shuttered, this means that the only two outlets remaining are both in Boston--in the Back Bay and on the waterfront. The address for the Woburn location of Joe's American Bar & Grill is 311 Mishawum Road while the address for the Dedham location is 985 Providence Highway. The website for the remaining locations can be found at https://www.joesamerican.com/
