Another big name within the Boston restaurant scene is going away in a couple of weeks.
According to a message from a source and a subsequent press release, Meritage Restaurant at the Boston Harbor Hotel is closing down following business service on February 15, with the release saying that the space will be repurposed as a private event area. The email does say that the Rowes Wharf Sea Grille and Rowes Wharf Bar within the hotel will remain in operation.
The Meritage, which has been in business for 17 years, is a fine-dining spot that is known for its food and wine pairings, with Executive Chef Daniel Bruce heading up the kitchen; Bruce will remain on and will oversee all food operations at the Boston Harbor Hotel.

Irish Investment Firm Danu Partners Purchases The Strega Group
An Irish investment firm that owns a Boston-based group of high-end steakhouses has purchased another local restaurant group, though not all of that group's dining spots are part of the deal.
According to an article in The Boston Globe, Danu Partners has acquired The Strega Group, with Strega Waterfront in the Seaport District, Strip by Strega in Park Plaza, Strega Prime in Woburn, and all five locations of Caffe Strega being part of the package as well as an affiliated catering business. The post says that Nick Varano and The Varano Group will continue to run the North End location of Strega along with the nearby Nico and Rina's, and Varano will also still be involved with Fratelli at the Encore Boston Harbor casino and hotel in Everett.
Danu Partners, which is the parent company of the Smith & Wollensky Restaurant Group, Inc., has introduced a new holding company called PPX Hospitality Brands that will be behind the investment firm's restaurant businesses in the United States along with its expansion plans in this country. (Two locations of Smith & Wollensky can be found in the local area--one on the Boston waterfront and another in Wellesley.)

Villa Luisa Plans to Open in Boston's Back Bay
A new restaurant may be coming to Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, though very little is known about it at this point in time.
According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Villa Luisa is planning to open on Newbury Street, with the restaurant including seating for 46 in its dining room, another 3 at a bar, and approximately 1,100 square feet of space--and it is applying for a beer, wine, and liqueur license. Based on the address given, it looks like the dining spot would be taking over the space where Dosa Factory had been, and before that, Steve's Greek Cuisine. No other information can be found on the restaurant online, though the notice does say that the manager would be Hebert H. Entwistle III and the parent company is 316 Newbury Restaurant Holder LLC. More should be learned about Villa Luisa later next week, so stay tuned for updates.
The address for the proposed Villa Luisa in the Back Bay would be 316 Newbury Street, Boston, MA, 02115.
[March 4 update: According to a source, Villa Luisa will be a casual restaurant that features Mediterranean fare.]

Atlantico Is Opening in the Former Southern Proper Space in Boston's South End
What looks to be a new seafood restaurant is replacing a Southern-style dining spot in the South End of Boston, and it apparently has a big local name behind it.
Based on a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Atlantico is looking to open in the former Southern Proper space on Harrison Avenue, with a source indicating to us that the upcoming spot is planning to focus at least in part on seafood. The hearing notice also confirms something else that our source told us, that Michael Serpa (Select Oyster Bar, Grand Tour) is involved with the new restaurant. (Serpa also used to work at one of Boston's best-known dining spots--Neptune Oyster Bar in the North End.) More should be known about the new eatery by later next week, so stay tuned for updates.
Southern Proper closed on New Year's Eve after being in business for a bit less than two years.
The address for Atlantico is 600 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118.
[February 19 update: Boston Magazine reports that Atlantico will indeed be focusing on seafood, with food and wine offerings having Spanish and Portuguese influences. The restaurant, which plans to open sometime this spring, will also feature an all-day cafe along with a cocktail bar.]

Casa De Greek Plans to Replace Tilted Kilt in Billerica
It appears that a restaurant chain known by some as the "Scottish Hooters" has disappeared from the local landscape and that a Greek dining spot will apparently be taking over its last Boston-area space.
According to a source, a sign is up at the site of the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery space in Billerica saying that Casa De Greek is opening there, with a Yelp page appearing to confirm this. Very little is known about the upcoming Greek restaurant, and it is not known exactly when Tilted Kilt closed, so keep checking back for any updates that may come in.
Tilted Kilt first opened in Billerica in 2016, with another location opening in the Fenway section of Boston a year later, though that outlet closed in 2018. A Quincy location had once been looked at as well several years ago, but the city ultimately rejected that restaurant.
The address for the now-closed Tilted Kilt in Billerica (and the upcoming Casa De Greek) is 15 Middlesex Turnpike, Billerica, MA, 01821.

Aegean Restaurant in Framingham May Be Going Up for Auction
What had once been a pair of well-known Greek restaurants could be completely disappearing from the landscape, as its original location appears to be going up for auction.
According to a source, it looks like the Aegean Restaurant in Framingham is going on the auction block, with a Framingham Source article saying that the Route 30 dining spot appears to be scheduled for a foreclosure auction on February 25, while a Framingham Forward post shows that the restaurant had been late in renewing its common victualler license in December. The Framingham location of the Aegean Restaurant first opened approximately 40 years ago, and was joined by another location in Watertown in 2001; the Framingham outlet moved to its present location in 2005 while the Watertown location ended up shutting down in 2016.
Both posts mention that the Framingham location of the Aegean Restaurant was still open as of this weekend.
The address for the Aegean Restaurant in Framingham is 257 Cochituate Road (Route 30), Framingham, MA, 01701. Its website can be found at http://www.aegeanrestaurants.com/
[January 31 update: Wicked Local confirms that the Aegean Restaurant is indeed on the auction block, as a post within The Zekos Group site shows that the building in which it is housed is listed as a foreclosure auction; a poster within the Nobscot Neighbors Facebook group does say that the restaurant was still open as of a couple of days ago.]
[February 24 update: A worker at the restaurant mentions on Facebook that the Aegean still appears to be open, at least as of this past weekend.]
[February 25 update: According to a source, the Aegean will not be closing after all and the auction is off, with a message from the restaurant confirming this.]

Whaling in Oklahoma in Boston's South End Is Closed
A South End restaurant with an unusual name--and a place that has one of the region's best-known chefs behind it--appears to be shuttered, and it is not known if/when it might open again.
According to a source, Whaling in Oklahoma was locked up and dark late Sunday afternoon during normal business hours, while another source had told us last week that the Tremont Street dining spot was apparently closing, though no other details had been given at the time. A check within its reservations section all week long showed that it stopped taking reservations after Saturday night and as of Sunday afternoon and again this morning, it was indeed no longer taking any reservations at all. Phone calls placed late on Sunday went directly to voicemail, and its website and Facebook page give no indication as to what might be going on.
Tim Maslow of the now-closed Strip-T's in Watertown and Ribelle in Brookline first opened Whaling in Oklahoma in the summer of 2018, with the place being a modern American brasserie with Japanese influences. A wine bar called Le Canular opened in an adjacent space last fall, residing in the former Sister Sorel space. (Whaling in Oklahoma took over the former Tremont 647 space.)
The address for the Whaling in Oklahoma is 647 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02118.
[January 31 update: Boston Magazine confirms that Whaling in Oklahoma and Le Canular are both closed for good, with business partner Brian Lesser indicating that they are now looking into "various options" for the space.]

A New York City-based group of "farm-to-counter" restaurants is planning to expand once again into the Boston area, with another Cambridge outlet apparently in the works.
According to a licensing commission hearing agenda page, Dig Inn is looking to open in Kendall Square, with the notice indicating that the upcoming eatery could have seating for 40 indoors and an additional 14 on a seasonal patio, and that it hopes to acquire a full liquor license. The address for the proposed location of Dig Inn in Kendall Square would be One Broadway, Cambridge, MA, 02142. The website for all locations is at https://www.diginn.com/

T's Pub in Boston May Be Replaced by Gopchang Story
Yet another longtime Boston dining and drinking spot appears to be closing, and it may be replaced by a Korean BBQ restaurant that features dishes made with the innards of animals.
According to a source, T's Pub on Commonwealth Avenue is looking to transfer its liquor license to Gopchang Story which would operate within the same space, with this being confirmed by a website for the latter that gives the address of T's, saying that a new location is "under construction" there. Gopchang, which currently has locations in Manhattan and the Flushing section of Queens, has its roots in South Korea and focuses on dishes using large and small intestines of cattle and/or pigs along with other entrails, according to the site.
T's Pub, which has been in business since 1971, has been a popular spot with college students over the years (especially from nearby Boston University) and people going to the Paradise music club which is a couple of storefronts down.
The address for T's Pub (and the proposed Gopchang Story) is 973 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, 02215.

The Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub in Cambridge's Central Square Has Been Put Up for Sale
One of the region's best-known music complexes is on the market.
According to an article from Cambridge Day, The Middle East Restaurant and Nightclub in Central Square is listed for sale, with owner Nabil Sater saying that "It's been tough," apparently referring to the long hours involved and trying to pay off the mortgage for the complex. Sater does think that any sale would be in the distant future or unlikely and that his hope is for the place to continue running as a nightclub. Nabil and Joseph Sater purchased The Middle East in 2014, with the complex currently including ZuZu restaurant and Sonia, the latter of which resides in the space where the legendary music club T.T. the Bear's had once been).
The Middle East was originally a Middle Eastern restaurant before becoming a music venue in 1987.
The address for The Middle East is 472-480 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its website can be found at https://www.mideastoffers.com/

Gelato & Chill Is Opening a Retail Shop in Hingham
A gelato company that is based on the South Shore is returning home in a sense, opening a shop in the town where it has its commercial kitchen--and where it initially got its start.
According to an article in Boston Magazine, Gelato & Chill is planning to open a retail outlet in the former Cold Stone Creamery space at the Derby Street Shoppes in Hingham, joining its other location at Time Out Market in Boston's Fenway. This will technically be the third location to open, as the company once had a kiosk at The Innovation and Design Building in Boston's Seaport District, but that outlet has since closed.
The Hingham location of Gelato & Chill hopes to open in the spring, and while it will continue to use its commercial kitchen in Hingham, some production of its products will also take place at the new shop as well.

The address for Haley House Bakery Cafe is 12 Dade Street, Roxbury, MA, 02119. The website for Haley House itself, which is a nonprofit community organization that has been around since 1966, can be found at http://haleyhouse.org while the cafe's site is at http://haleyhouse.org/hhbc/

The Capital Burger to Open in Former Papa Razzi Space in Boston's Back Bay
A restaurant that features gourmet burgers and spiked shakes--and which has a connection to a chain of upscale steakhouses--is planning to expand to Boston, taking over the space where a longtime Italian restaurant had been.
A Boston Sun article confirms what a Twitter poster mentioned this afternoon, that The Capital Burger is looking to open in the former Papa Razzi space in the Back Bay, with the article saying that the dining spot, which currently has a location in Washington, DC, is affiliated with The Capital Grille. Based on the menu at its original location, the Newbury Street outlet could have such items as burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, steak frites, fried calamari, cheese fries, spiked shakes, and more.
Papa Razzi closed in November after being in the Back Bay for three decades; the restaurant moved from another location at the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Streets approximately 10 years ago.
The address for the upcoming Capital Burger is 159 Newbury Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the Washington, DC, location is at https://www.thecapitalburger.com/
[June 2 update: The Capital Burger could be one step closer to opening in the Back Bay by later this week, as a licensing board hearing page shows that its request for a liquor license is slated to be looked at tomorrow (Wednesday, June 3).]

Artifact Cider Project to Open Taproom in Cambridge's Central Square
A craft cider company that got its start in Western Massachusetts then moved to the Boston area before moving back to the western part of the state is returning to the Boston area once again.
According to an article from Boston Magazine, Artifact Cider Project is planning to open a taproom in an as-of-yet undisclosed space in the Central Square area of Cambridge, joining its taproom in Florence. The business started out in 2014 with its first home being in a garage in Springfield, with the company moving to Everett three years later before moving to its current home in Florence where it has a production cellar and retail area along with its taproom.
The article indicates that production of Artifact's ciders will continue to be done in Florence, and that the Cambridge taproom could offer snacks in addition to cider, though the exact plans for the taproom--which hopes to open this spring--are still in the works.

CGK on Newbury to Open in Former Tapeo Space in Boston's Back Bay
[Ed note: This article was updated on January 27 to reflect new information about the ownership of the place.]
A new restaurant may be opening in the Back Bay space where one of the city's best-known restaurants had once been.
According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, CGK on Newbury is looking to acquire the liquor license of Tapeo, with the place having a connection to Crazy Good Kitchen in Malden according to a follow-up message received on January 27. Back in 2018, it appeared that a restaurant called Tony's Kitchen might be going into the Tapeo space, but those plans never came to fruition. [Note that the hearing page got the name wrong for the place, as it is indeed CGK on Newbury rather than GKC on Newbury.]
Tapeo, which had been in business for 22 years until closing in 2018, was known for its tapas, Spanish wines, and more.
The address for the proposed CGK on Newbury is 266 Newbury Street, Boston, MA, 02116.
[March 12 update: According to a source, CGK on Newbury will be a casual restaurant that features such items as burgers and chicken, and it will have a seasonal patio in addition to indoor seating. (The dining spot is not expected to serve alcohol.)]

Salt & Olive Market in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Closing
Yet another food spot in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge is shutting down.
According to an article from Cambridge Day, Salt & Olive Market in the Garage is closing at the end of February, with "family health issues" being the biggest reason for its closure, though economic trends seem to have played a role as well; co-founder Mary Taylor says that "being a small retailer in the age of Amazon and with what's happening in Harvard Square is not easy," while Harvard Square Business Association executive director Denise Jillson mentions that "People are just ordering way too much online....Foot traffic is an issue. We need more of it."
Salt & Olive first opened on Mass. Ave. back in 2014, moving to its current space in the Garage last May. The market offers a variety of gourmet products along with coffee and tea.
A number of other Harvard Square restaurants, bars, and food places have closed over recent times, including Flat Patties, Cambridge 1, Tom's BaoBao, Zambrero, John Harvard's Brewery and Ale House, Night Market, Sweet Bakery, and Crema Cafe.

Top of the Hub at Boston's Prudential Center Is Closing
Another one of Boston's best-known restaurants is saying farewell, and this one has one of the best views in the region.
According to an article in The Boston Globe, Top of the Hub at the Prudential Center is slated to shut down on April 18 along with the Skywalk Observatory, which confirms what several sources had told us late last year. We were told at the time that the restaurant might be closing around the end of 2019, but a message sent to us from the restaurant denied that it would be doing so. In the article, officials from Select Restaurants, Inc. said in a statement that "The closures are the result of the decision of Boston Properties Inc., owners of The Prudential Tower, not to provide a new lease for the venues despite several years of discussion" while Boston Properties indicates that they are "planning an exciting new design for an observatory."
Top of the Hub, which is located 52 floors up with 360-degree views of Boston and beyond, first opened back in 1965, according to its Facebook page. Its website can be found at http://topofthehub.net/

Maria's Kitchen Is Opening in West Roxbury
It looks like a brand new restaurant is planning to open in West Roxbury, taking over three vacant spaces within a building that the restaurant owners purchased.
According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, Maria's Kitchen is looking to open on Centre Street, with the website for the dining spot saying that it will be bringing "flavor, family-style cooking, and livelihood" to a building that had been home to a takeout pizza spot, a hair salon, and a small office. The owners of the upcoming eatery say on the site that they have been in the restaurant business for more than 35 years, and a web search for Dimitris Meletlidis, whose name is mentioned at the bottom of the website, indicates that this is apparently the same person who has been involved with dining spots/pizzerias in West Roxbury, Chelsea, and Revere over the years, according to an old Chelsea Record article.
Based on the website, it looks like Maria's Kitchen will offer such items as pizza, calzones, sandwiches, pasta dishes, seafood, Greek dishes, and more.
The address for this new restaurant in West Roxbury is: Maria's Kitchen, 1829 Centre Street, West Roxbury, MA, 02132. Its website can be found at mariaskitchenboston.com

Melting Pot Opens in Former Full Moon Space in Cambridge's Huron Village
A couple of months ago, it was reported that a popular family-friendly restaurant in Cambridge was closing, though a new spot would be replacing it and it would apparently stay mostly the same. Now we have learned that the new restaurant has opened, though it is quite a bit different from the old place.
According to a source, Melting Pot is now open in Huron Village, moving into the former Full Moon space on Huron Avenue. At the time of the announcement of Full Moon closing, a Cambridge Day article had said that new owner Bhola Pandey--who is also behind Mitho Restaurant in Winchester--would not be making any real changes, with Pandey's attorney, Joe Devlin, saying that "he's running it exactly as it is now....he's buying it to run it as [is], not to change anything about it." The article mentioned that other than the name change and an extra hour in business, no other changes were expected, but it turns out that the new Melting Pot is a Nepalese restaurant, with its menu showing curry dishes, stir-fry chili options, stir-fry noodle dishes, pan-grilled meat and seafood items such as wild boar ribs and goat, and more. [Ed note: The new restaurant has no apparent connection to The Melting Pot, a chain of fondue restaurants with locations in Bedford and Framingham.]
Mitho Restaurant, which opened in late 2018, also features Nepalese fare.
The address for Melting Pot in Huron Village is 344 Huron Ave, Cambridge, MA, 02138. Its website can be found at http://meltingpotma.com/
[January 31 update: According to a licensing commission hearing agenda page, Melting Pot is looking to change its name to Base Crave. It is not known if the requested name change has anything to do with the aforementioned restaurant chain with a similar name; as soon as we find out more information, we will post an update here.]
[February 3 update: According to a source, Melting Pot in Cambridge has officially changed its name to Base Crave.]

BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse to Open in Framingham
A California-based restaurant chain that is known in part for its deep-dish pizza is expanding to the Greater Boston area.
According to a job post within the Craigslist site, BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse is planning to open in Framingham, with interviews taking place at the Residence Inn on Staples Drive near where the Mass. Pike and Route 9 intersect. (An exact address for the restaurant and bar itself has not been given as of yet.) Based on its menu at other locations, the upcoming dining and drinking spot will offer a "Southern California twist" on Chicago-style pizza along with such possible options as tacos, burgers, pasta dishes, ribs, grilled chicken, and fish and chips, along with a variety of their own craft beers. If all goes as planned, the Framingham location of BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse could be opening in June.
Currently, only two other locations of BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse can be found in New England--in Warwick, RI, and Manchester, CT--though it looks like another outlet may be coming to North Attleboro as well.

Zuma Tex-Mex Grill at Faneuil Hall to Become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill
Last summer, it was reported that a naming dispute had developed between two Boston restaurants, with the issue ultimately being settled and that one of the restaurants would be changing its name. Now we have learned what the new name will be.
According to a source (Geoff Wong), Zuma Tex-Mex Grill in Faneuil Hall is going to become Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill, with an events page indicating that a party called "Zuma: The Last Stand" will take place on January 31 and that Mezcala will debut the following day. The page mentions that no changes to its menu or ownership will be taking place, with the only change being its name, while saying "but oh what a party! It took 13 days to defeat the Texas rebels at the Alamo. They went down in a flame of glory and now we want to do the same, so come celebrate good-byes and NEW BEGINNINGS with us and be part of history." As reported earlier, the owners of Zuma Tex-Mex Grill filed a lawsuit against Zuma Boston, a high-end Japanese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel One Dalton Street in the Back Bay, and a Superior Court judge subsequently ruled in favor of the former. Several weeks later, it was reported that the dispute was settled "amicably" and that Zuma Tex-Mex Grill would go through a name change.
The address for Zuma Tex-Mex Grill (and what will soon be Mezcala Tex-Mex Grill) is 7 N Market Street, Boston, MA, 02109. Its website can be found at https://zumatexmexgrill.com/

Prime, Your Trusted Butcher in Arlington Heights Is Closing
An independent butcher shop that broke away from a chain of meat markets is closing its doors.
A poster within The Arlington List Facebook group page mentions (via an auction page from E.F. Smith) indicates that Prime, Your Trusted Butcher in Arlington Heights is closing, with a note on the shop's website indicating that the Mass. Ave. market will be shutting down by or before January 19. The note on the site says that they informed their employees after "careful consideration of the long-term financial performance of the store" and that gift cards, discount certificates, and store credits will be honored until their supplies run out.
Prime first opened in the fall of 2014, replacing a location of The Meat House, as the owner of the Arlington Heights location of the latter decided to change the place to an independent store with a new name. All New England locations of The Meat House now appear to be closed, with at least some becoming butcher shops with different names. (The website for The Meat House now goes to a location in New Jersey.)
The address for Prime, Your Trusted Butcher is 1398 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA, 02476. Its website can be found at https://primebutchershop.com
